How do I tell if it's the flapper or the fill valve?

Do the dye test: add a few drops of food colouring to the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If colour seeps into the bowl, the flapper isn't sealing. If the tank keeps refilling or the water rises past the overflow tube instead, it's the fill valve or float. That one check usually tells you which part to swap.
