Grow Strawberries in Pots
Plant strawberries in containers to enjoy fresh fruit even if you only have a patio or balcony.
Quick answer
Choose a pot at least 30 cm wide, fill it with multi-purpose compost, and plant strawberry runners so the crowns sit level with the soil surface. Water well and feed every few weeks.
Strawberries grow well in pots because you can move them to catch the sun and keep fruit away from slugs. A single large pot on a patio can produce a handful of berries every few days through summer.
What you’ll need
- pot (30cm+ diameter)
- multi-purpose compost
- strawberry plants
- slow-release feed
- water
- straw or matting
Step by step
- 1
Choose a pot with drainage holes
A diameter of 30 cm or more gives roots room to spread. Terracotta, plastic or wood all work well.
- 2
Add compost and feed
Fill the pot to within 5 cm of the rim with multi-purpose compost. Mix in a slow-release fertiliser according to the packet instructions.
- 3
Plant at the correct depth
Set each strawberry plant so the crown, where leaves meet roots, sits just above the compost surface. Burying the crown causes rot.
- 4
Water thoroughly
Soak the compost until water drains from the holes. This settles the soil around the roots and removes air pockets.
- 5
Tuck straw or matting under the fruit
When flowers appear, lay straw or a fibrous mat around the plants to keep ripening berries off damp compost.
- 6
Move the pot to a sunny spot
Strawberries need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for the sweetest fruit.
Common mistakes
- Planting too deeply and burying the crown, which leads to rotting.
- Letting the compost dry out completely, which stunts fruit development.
- Crowding too many plants into one small pot.
- Forgetting to net the plants when fruit ripens, allowing birds to eat the berries.
Frequently asked
When is the best time to plant strawberries in pots?
Early spring is ideal, but you can plant in autumn for an earlier crop the following year.
Can I leave potted strawberries outside in winter?
Yes, but move the pot to a sheltered spot and raise it off the ground to stop the roots freezing in waterlogged compost.
How long do strawberry plants last in pots?
About three to four years. After that, replace them with fresh runners for the best fruit.
